I actually kind of said how I brightened the eyes in my post. It's mostly the work of the really nice camera I now have (my old one wasn't nearly as good as that!). I also use the picnik eye brightening effect to really make them shine=) However this is a premium effect, so you'll need a premium ($) account to use it.
This probably didn't help ya much, as you're not in the market for a DSLR camera at the moment and probably don't have Picnik Premium! So sorry about that!
